Heavyweight sides seeking the knockout punch

The two teams, which finished first and fourth in the preliminary 56-game phase of the Twenty20 league, look evenly matched ahead of what promises to be a top-drawer stuff in front of a capacity crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.
The team that holds its nerves better and grabs chances that come its way would go through to the summit clash against the winners of the second semi-final, on May 31, between Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings.
The Shane Warne-led Jaipur, impregnable at home, had finished with only three losses from their 14 preliminary phase ties and have a 1-1 head-to-head record against the Daredevils, led by Virender Sehwag, who got into the last four with seven wins and 15 points to their credit.
Both had lost their matches to hosts Mumbai Indians when they visited this metro earlier and those ties were held in DY Patil Stadium. Both must be wishing fervently that a change in venue for this knock-out tie would bring in happy tidings.
Both the teams have depended on their top-order to fire well and pile up a big total, and middle orders of both the sides looked a bit under-prepared when chips were down.
They would be keen to topple the top three rival batsmen cheaply to gain a big advantage.
Tracks at the Wankhede for the IPL have helped the seam bowlers by providing lateral movement and extra bounce and someone of the calibre of Delhi Daredevils' champion bowler Glenn McGrath would relish rolling his arm ovhe battle between McGrath, with support from Sri Lankan Farveez Maharoof and V Yo Mahesh, and Rajasthan's successful innings launchers Graeme Smith (416 runs) and Swapnil Asnodkar could be crucial to the game's outcome.
The same applies to the Sohail Tanvir-Shane Watson-Munaf Patel combine who will be up against the marauding Delhi opening pair of Gautam Gambhir (523) and Sehwag (403), as well as another in-form batsman at number three, Shikhar Dhawan.
Tanvir, with his extra quick bowling arm action, has been a real revelation in the IPL and has hardly been collared by any rival batting line-up, indicated by his superb haul of 21 wickets at just 10 runs per victim.
The left-armer has been outstanding both in the beginning and at the death and is a major threat that needs to be negotiated well by the Delhi batsmen who did not play against him in the previous two clashes.
Rajasthan possess a better spin attack in the great Warne and his understudies Yusuf Pathan and Dinesh Salunkhe while Delhi depend on Amit Mishra, for the most part, with Sehwag chipping in with his off breaks. But seam bowlers are expected to play a bigger role at the Wankhede.
Delhi have had a sizable break of five days going into the tie while Rajasthan, without a few key players including Warne, were outclassed by Punjab King's XI on Wednesday.
Winning the toss and fielding first has become the order of the day for matches which commence at 8 pm and the trend is likely to continue on Friday.
It has been largely rain-free so far in Mumbai, barring light drizzles, and the IPL authorities must be hoping that the weather remains clear over the next few days.
The high prevailing humidity, however, is not only uncomfortable for the players but also an indicator that rains are around the corner.

NTR remembered: Rich tributes paid

His son, Balakrishna speaking on the occasion said that he was feeling proud to NTR's son. "If there is another birth, I would like to born again as his (late NTR’s) son," he added.
Another actor from NTR's family Kalyanram informed us that his family would start social service at Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital. NTR Jr said that his grand father's blessings would continue on the family.
From the political line TDP chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu paid tributes to late NTR at Jaggaiahpet in Krishna district. He was participating in ‘Mee kosam’ rathayatra. NTR’s son Harikrishna, who is accompanying Chandrababu Naidu in the tour, also paid tributes to his father.

Bangalore win at last as Chennai choke

Chennai: Rahul Dravid must have been wondering what Bangalore could do to register an elusive third victory in the IPL. But Dravid would be flummoxed after Chennai choked and gift-wrapped them a 14-run win at the MA Chidambaram stadium here on Wednesday.
The script went the dreaded direction again for Bangalore who only managed 126-8 with the bat, but a dramatic twist in the dying stages saw Chennai lose a flurry of wickets against an unrelenting bowling attack, appropriately led by Anil Kumble's 3-14.
Needing 15 runs from the last over bowled by Praveen Kumar, Suresh Raina declined two singles to Makhaya Ntini at the other end which cost Chennai dear. The last over went for a solitary run.
Openers Parthiv Patel (24) and Stephen Fleming (46) ensured a brisk start to their run chase, but with just half the runs left to notch up a win, Anil Kumble got Chennai into a hole they could never get themselves out of.
Kumble's three-wicket burst was backed up ably by a bowling attack short of Zaheer Khan, and with Dhoni back in the hut early, Dale Steyn produced an inspiring late spell to remove Albie Morkel and S Vidyut which included a stunning catch from Jacques Kallis.
Chennai, with 14 points before the start of the game having seen at least two spots for the semi-finals being filled, had even the schedule on their side with their last two games against Bangalore and Hyderabad — the disappointments of the season. But with the defeat in their penultimate fixture, Chennai's dreams of a semi-final berth ensures them as well as Delhi and Mumbai of a scrap till the last match.
Under-fire Bangalore captain Rahul Dravid waged yet another lone battle with a brave 47 before becoming one of Albie Morkel's four victims. Praveen Kumar was the next highest scorer with 21.

That the reason for Bangalore's nightmare has been their batting is no secret, and their umpteenth opening combination settled matters yet again as both departed within the powerplay overs after opting to bat. The slide never stopped — as ever — with half their side back in the pavilion by the 15th over, with just 76 runs on the board.
The newly introduced Fair Play Award must be high on Bangalore's agenda after a shambolic performance so far in the competition. Despite nine defeats they are on top of that table, and during yet another forgettable outing, Bangalore's new hope Sreevats Goswami kept up with his side's tradition as he walked after the umpire turned down Manpreet Gony's appeal for a catch behind.
Bangalore, who were outplayed by Delhi in their previous encounter, made three changes to their side, bringing in Mark Boucher, Virat Kohli and Vinaykumar to replace Cameron White, Bharat Chipli and Zaheer Khan.
Chennai, who were assured of a place in the final four of the competition, retained their eleven that scored a win in their rain-truncated fixture in Kolkata

Sachin sizzles but Mumbai lose to Mohali in thriller

Mumbai:Sachin Tendulkar did almost everything right while batting but still could not ensure a win for Mumbai. In a crunch Indian Premier League (IPL) match at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, the master batsman could only look on from the dugout as his team did a ‘hara-kiri’ to lose by one run to Mohali in a thrilling encounter.
Skipper Yuvraj Singh’s diving effort for a run out off the last delivery of the match sealed a semifinal berth for Mohali after Tendulkar had shepherded the team through in their chase of 190.
Tendulkar’s run out in the 17th over at 159-4 pegged the team back and a spate of run outs towards the end saw them being bowled out just short of the mark.
Tendulkar paced his innings well, hitting boundaries all around the ground with deft placements rather than brute power to register a half-century (65 off 46 balls). He smashed 12 boundaries and ran well between the wickets to keep Mumbai in the hunt even as other batsmen failed to produce significant contributions.
Abhishek Nayar, dropped at the square-leg fence early on, holed out to the same position in trying to attack leg-spinner Piyush Chawla. Nayar, one of the finds of the tournament, struck 27 off 18 deliveries with one six and two consecutive sixes off VRV Singh.
Sanath Jayasuriya and Dwayne Smith too perished when looking good for big scores. Jayasuriya reached 20 off just eight deliveries, hitting Irfan Pathan for two huge sixes but after playing a couple of dot balls, tried a heave off a slower one from Sreesanth and was trapped lbw. Smith too scored 20 before being run out in a mix-up with Tendulkar.
The match went to the wire as VRV Singh bowled a loose last over but Mumbai took unnecessary risks and lost their last three wickets to run outs, taking the count to a total of five in the innings.

Earlier, opener Shaun Marsh struck a belligerent 81 and Luke Pomersbach carved an aggressive 79 not out as Mohali set a stiff target of 190.
Marsh was fluent from early on, quick to loft pacers as well as spinners, getting to the pitch of the ball with his quick footwork. The Aussie struck four sixes and seven fours during his 56-ball knock to virtually knock the stuffing out of a team that had been on a superb recent run.
He added 133 runs for the second wicket with Pomersbach before holing out to Pollock in the deep off off-spinner Sidharth Chitnis. But the job had been done for his team and Pomersbach continued the good work after his compatriot had returned to the dugout.
Marsh and Pomersbach came together after the first-ball dismissal of James Hopes by Pollock and sent the opposition on a leather-hunt straightaway. The two ran brilliantly and were always keen to punch on the loose stuff.
Yuvraj’s current lean patch continued as he once again failed to capitalise on the rampaging stand between Marsh and Pomersbach, falling to Chitnis. While Mohali have several batsmen who have come good for the, the skipper’s lack of scores would certainly be a concern.
In the final count, Mohali probably would end up thinking that they could have put up a bigger total than they finally did, but some tight bowling towards the end of their innings went on to ensure that it was not an unreachable target.
Chitnis ended up with 2-40 but incredibly, Pollock and Ashish Nehra, the two most experienced Mumbai bowlers, bowled only three overs apiece.
It was the eighth win in 11 matches for Mohali, while Mumbai lost their fifth match in as many outings, ending a six-match winning streak.
